Gary Bell Edens, 51, was shot and killed at his home on Michigan Street in Lawrence, Kansas, on the evening of July 17, 2013. An altercation at the front door between the residents and the visitors ended when a gunshot struck Edens in the head. A neighbor performed CPR and Edens was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His two sons, one an adult and one a young child, were in the house during the shooting.
Less than an hour after the shooting, authorities arrested 19-year-old Brittny M. Adams of Topeka and 28-year-old Jonathan R. Rush of Wichita. Adams was charged with second-degree murder and was later reported to have been the person who fired the shot; a former cellmate testified that Adams had boasted about the killing. Adams pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced in February 2014 to nearly 13 years, with additional time for threatening a corrections officer. Rush faced local charges that were later dropped as federal firearm charges were pursued; he pleaded guilty to the federal offense and awaited sentencing.
Does anyone have information about Gary Edens, his family, or the events that led to the July 17, 2013 shooting?
