Seth Bartell was a 15-year-old freshman from Cold Spring, Minnesota who was shot at Rocori High School on September 24, 2003. The first shot hit Bartell in the chest; a second shot intended for Bartell struck Rollins in the neck and killed him immediately. Bartell tried to flee but was pursued and shot again in the forehead. A gym coach, Mark Johnson, intervened, secured the gun and escorted the shooter to the school office.

Bartell was taken to St. Cloud Hospital with severe head and brain trauma and died 16 days later on October 11, 2003. The shooting deeply affected the community, with students and staff mourning and expressing anger.
