Raymond Bernard Brooks, 51, was shot around noon on September 22, 2022, at an apartment complex in the 1700 block of Jennifer Road in Lexington, Kentucky. First responders found Brooks with life-threatening gunshot injuries and he was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. The case was recorded as the city’s 36th homicide that year after the shooter had fled before police arrived.

Investigators later identified a suspect. On a Friday in November, 37-year-old Jonathan Lockhart was charged with Brooks’s murder. At that time Lockhart was already jailed in the Fayette County Detention Center on unrelated allegations arising from an arrest five days after Brooks’s death, when methamphetamine and a handgun were reportedly found at his residence. Lockhart was also charged with first-degree robbery.
