On the evening of July 30, 2022, 42-year-old Gregory Cain was fatally shot during an altercation at a residence on Mechanic Street in Princeton, Kentucky. Officers responding to reports of shots fired around 9:45 p.m. found Cain on the front porch; he was taken to Caldwell Medical Center and pronounced dead after suffering multiple gunshot wounds.

About 30 minutes after the shooting, 18-year-old Ashton Logan Ocampo walked into the local post office and told dispatchers he wanted to turn himself in. Ocampo was taken into custody, interviewed at the Princeton Police Department, and allegedly confessed to shooting Cain. He was arrested and charged with murder and with theft by unlawful taking of a firearm and was lodged in the Caldwell County Jail.
