On October 5, 2021, 23-year-old Jayontai McCann was found with multiple gunshot wounds behind an apartment building at the Liberty Heights Apartments on Liberty Road in Lexington, Kentucky. He was taken to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital and pronounced dead at 5:17 a.m.; the Fayette County Coroner ruled the death a homicide.

Lexington Police detectives opened an investigation and said they had not identified any suspects at the time. Community leaders and faith-based organizations publicly responded to the shooting, using McCann’s death to call for stronger violence-prevention measures in the city. No arrests have been publicly announced and the case remains an open homicide investigation.
