Nineteen-year-old Alex Updegrove, a White male, was fatally shot in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, on the evening of October 4, 2021. The shooting happened inside a residence on Fairview Drive during a gathering of young people. According to police reports, a juvenile present made a verbal threat that he should just shoot Updegrove. Shortly afterward, the same juvenile allegedly loaded a handgun and fired at least one shot, striking Updegrove. Witnesses saw Updegrove fall as the shooter stood holding the pistol. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Christian County Coroner’s Office.

The juvenile, identified as 16-year-old Richard Rawlins Jr., fled before police arrived and was arrested the next day. A Christian County grand jury indicted him as an adult on a murder charge. In March 2022 Rawlins pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter as a youthful offender; at sentencing the judge imposed a 10-year prison term under the plea agreement. Updegrove’s family delivered impact statements at the hearing.
