Charles Newton, 58, was killed on the evening of October 18, 2020, while hunting from an ATV with his wife on their family farm on McKinney Road in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Around 6:30 p.m., as dusk fell, a muzzleloader shot fired from a vehicle parked at the edge of a field struck Newton in the head; the Christian County coroner pronounced him dead at the scene.

The shooter was 63-year-old Julian Newton of Sharon Grove, who told investigators he mistook movement for a deer and had believed Charles and his wife had already left the area. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife investigated. A Christian County grand jury later indicted Julian Newton on second-degree manslaughter, first-degree wanton endangerment, taking wildlife from a vehicle, and illegal take of a deer.

In March 2021 Julian Newton pleaded guilty to an amended charge of reckless homicide and to first-degree wanton endangerment, hunting from a vehicle, and illegal taking of a deer; the judge accepted the plea and sentenced him to five years of unsupervised probation. Is there anyone who remembers hunting in the McKinney Road area that night or has additional information about the circumstances?
