On the evening of August 21, 2020, police in Elizabethtown, Kentucky responded to a shooting at an apartment complex on Plum Creek Court. Officers found two men with gunshot wounds; 24-year-old Darryl E. Cooper Jr. was alive but was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head. A second man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
Darryl Cooper, a native of Philadelphia who lived in Radcliff, was a graduate of John Hardin High School and attended All Nations Worship Center. Friends remembered him for his friendly, smiling nature; he is described as a beloved son, brother, and friend.
Within hours, police arrested 20-year-old Anthony Witherspoon of Radcliff during a traffic stop. Authorities say an altercation at the apartment, when Cooper and the other man arrived, preceded the shooting. Witherspoon was found with marijuana and paraphernalia in his vehicle and was charged with murder, two counts of first-degree assault for the other victim, tampering with physical evidence, and trafficking in marijuana; he was booked into the Hardin County Detention Center.
