On the afternoon of May 13, 2020, a vehicle sale meeting in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, ended in deadly violence. Thirty-two-year-old Shawn Fox, his girlfriend Kenia Thomas, and a friend, 37-year-old Michael B. Thomas, had driven from Henderson with $9,000 in cash to buy a car from a man identified as Taynandree Reed. The meeting on Patterson Street turned hostile after Reed entered the buyers’ Hyundai Elantra and delayed them for about 40 minutes. Reed briefly exited with Fox; when he returned alone he produced a handgun and shot Michael Thomas in the head, then shot Shawn Fox in the head and neck, and also shot Kenia Thomas.
Elizabethtown police found Shawn Fox and Michael B. Thomas dead inside the car. Kenia Thomas survived and was critically injured; her testimony became a key part of the investigation. Eight days later, police arrested 29-year-old Taynandree Reed in Versailles and charged him with two counts of murder, first-degree assault, unlawful possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, and being a second-degree persistent felony offender. Prosecutors said the motive was to steal the $9,000 the buyers had brought. Did anyone in the area witness the meeting on Patterson Street or see the Hyundai Elantra that afternoon?
