On the night of November 4, 2018, Matthew S. Francis, a 26-year-old man from Somerset, was shot and killed in the parking lot of the Cannon Corner Marathon on Berea Road in Richmond, Kentucky. The call reporting shots fired came in around 10:15 p.m., and the Madison County Coroner’s Office pronounced Francis dead at the scene.

Kentucky State Police say the shooting followed a heated argument between Francis and 22-year-old Brandon C. Short of Waco. Authorities allege Short produced a firearm during the dispute and fired a single fatal shot. Short was identified, arrested and charged with murder; he was lodged in the Madison County Detention Center and the KSP Post 7 Detective continued the investigation.
