On Father’s Day, June 17, 2018, a family argument in Lexington, Kentucky, ended when 23-year-old Austin Hendron was shot and killed in the driveway of a home on St. Ann Drive. Austin was attempting to walk away from the dispute when his father, James Hendron Jr., allegedly retrieved a gun and fired multiple times. Austin was struck in the chest, back, and leg, taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, and died that evening; the Fayette County coroner ruled the cause of death multiple gunshot wounds. A brother said Austin was shot five times as he tried to leave.

James Hendron Jr. was arrested and charged with murder and domestic violence. At trial the prosecution described the father returning inside, sitting in a recliner, and calling Austin’s mother to tell her to come pick up her son after the shooting; the defense said James acted in self-defense and portrayed Austin as the aggressor with a history of substance use and prior physical abuse toward his father. The jury found James Harvey Hendron Jr., then 51, guilty of murder in February 2024, though later rulings in the case altered that outcome.

Did anyone in the Lexington area witness the shooting or the events leading up to it, or have information about the family’s interactions that day?
