Late on a Tuesday night in Newport, Kentucky, 38-year-old David A DePhillips was shot while behind the wheel of his taxi after a drug deal involving counterfeit money went wrong. Surveillance near 9th and Saratoga shows a white Saturn arriving; a man left the car, approached DePhillips’s cab, and fired one shot while a female passenger in the taxi was left unharmed and later served as a key witness.

Mortally wounded, DePhillips attempted to drive away but crashed a block and a half later into three parked cars and a tree in the 900 block of Washington Avenue. He was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he died of his injuries. Within a day Newport Police arrested 20-year-old Justin Russell and later charged 19-year-old Alyssa Baker and 18-year-old Jarrett Annus; investigators say Russell was the shooter, Baker drove the Saturn, and Annus helped plan what began as a robbery. The U.S. Secret Service was enlisted because counterfeit currency was involved.

If anyone knew DePhillips, the people he stayed with, or saw the white Saturn that night, can you share what you remember?
