On the evening of Tuesday, October 3, 2017, in Verona, Kentucky, 42-year-old Robert Hiles was shot and killed inside his home on Jacobs Ridge Road at about 9:30 p.m. Kentucky State Police responded and found him deceased. The person who made the 911 call was the individual who had fired the shots.

Investigators identified the shooter as his wife, 36-year-old Debra Hiles. She was taken into custody and charged with murder and lodged in the Carroll County Detention Center. Debra told investigators she shot her husband after he had raped her earlier that evening; she said she resisted his sexual advances, then about an hour later retrieved a handgun and shot him multiple times. A rape kit examination was reportedly performed and indicated some level of sexual trauma. The couple’s children were placed in state custody after the shooting.
