DeOntai Jarrell Bates, 25, was shot in the chest while a passenger in an SUV parked on a gravel driveway in the 700 block of Faulkner Avenue in Lexington on December 29, 2016. He was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital but died shortly after arrival. Two other men were in the vehicle: the victim’s mother’s boyfriend, who stayed and was questioned, and a third man who fled immediately after the shot and was the subject of a police K-9 search.
Authorities identified Brian Lamar Jones as a suspect; he turned himself in after a warrant in January 2017 and was charged with murder. In March 2017 a Fayette County grand jury dismissed the murder charge but indicted Jones on felony tampering with evidence and possession of marijuana, alleging he concealed, removed, or altered a gun on or about the day of the shooting.
Did anyone in Lexington know DeOntai or have information about the people in that SUV that afternoon?
