On the night of August 4, 2016, James Robert Brown, a 36-year-old carpenter from Beattyville, Kentucky, was shot and killed. His body was found the next day, August 5, 2016, in a wooded area off Hell Creek Road in Lee County, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators tied Brown’s death to that of another local man, Billy Roark, who had been found killed in the same remote area a day earlier. The Kentucky State Police said both men were shot and killed on the same night in two related incidents. In the days after the discoveries, multiple arrests followed: Anthony T. Taylor, 34, and Kasandra K. White, 23, were charged with murder and complicity to murder; Wesley T. Johnson, 22, and Kevin F. Kendall, 32, were charged with complicity to murder. Later arrests included Jay N. Shoemaker, 39, and Raigan D. Griffin, 22, charged with complicity in Roark’s death, and Amy Turner, 31, and Alysia Hensley, 33, charged with hindering prosecution.
