Windell Jones, 22, was shot and killed inside a townhouse on Westport Road in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, on January 27, 2016. Police found him suffering from a gunshot wound and he died at the scene. Friends described him as a college student who worked at a local restaurant and was known for a friendly demeanor and big dreams.

In the days after the shooting police named a woman, Victoria Lambert, as a person of interest. In March 2016 two juveniles were arrested and charged with murder and robbery. By May 2017 four people—Taliyah Woods, Monti Lopez-Olivera, Tyheim Taylor, and Braylond Buckler—had been indicted on charges including complicity to commit murder, robbery, assault, and tampering with physical evidence; prosecutors sought the death penalty for Woods. Monti Lopez-Olivera later accepted a plea deal, and an additional arrest of Carmen Haitshan on complicity to tampering with physical evidence came in July 2016.
