Senior Patrol Officer Daniel Neil Ellis was shot while investigating an armed robbery and died from his wounds two days later. On November 4, 2015, Officer Ellis and another officer went to an apartment on Ballard Drive in Richmond, Kentucky, after following up on a report that a woman had been mugged at a gas station. A man at the apartment, identified as Gregory Ratliff, allegedly told officers the suspect was not inside and allowed them to search. As Ellis entered a back bedroom, he was ambushed and shot in the head by Raleigh Sizemore Jr., who had been hiding there.

Ellis, 33 and a seven-year veteran of the Richmond Police Department, was taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Center and died on November 6, 2015. Sizemore was struck by return fire from the second officer and taken into custody. In connection with the robbery and Ellis’s killing, Gregory Ratliff, Carl Banks, and Rita Creech were also arrested. Prosecutors announced intentions to seek the death penalty for Sizemore for the murder and for Ratliff for complicity. The shooting left a wife and young son and deeply affected the Richmond community.

If anyone knew Officer Ellis, the Ballard Drive apartment, or has information about the incident, please come forward.
