In the early morning hours of February 11, 2015, 37-year-old James Kevin Pratt of Pikeville was shot in an apartment on Jay Street. Police arrived after a 911 call around 2:30 a.m. and found Pratt with a gunshot wound to his chest; he was taken to Pikeville Medical Center and pronounced dead.

Officers later went to a residence on Mount Martha Drive and arrested 37-year-old Robert Adkins of Pikeville. Adkins was charged with murder in connection with Pratt’s death. The shooting was reportedly linked to an altercation over a very small amount of money, estimated at $2 to $4, and half of a Klonopin pill that Adkins said Pratt had stolen.

In court, the case produced a conviction on a lesser count of first-degree manslaughter; before the jury recommended sentence, Adkins apologized to Pratt’s family. If anyone knew James Pratt or has information about the events that led to his death, please share what you know.
