A house fire on Main Street in Beattyville, Kentucky, on the evening of April 11, 2014, initially looked like a tragic blaze that claimed the life of 79-year-old homeowner Martha Belle Hollar. Neighbors knew her as a longtime local business owner who collected antiques. After firefighters extinguished the mobile home fire and found her body, an autopsy the next day showed she had been dead before the fire started — the cause of death was a fatal gunshot wound, and the case was reclassified as a homicide.
Within a couple of weeks the Kentucky State Police arrested 55-year-old Melvin G. Slone and charged him with Hollar’s murder. Friends and community members noted there had been a burglary at her home weeks earlier, and some speculated that might be related to the killing.
Did anyone in Beattyville at the time notice suspicious activity around the Hollar home before the fire?
