Early on September 22, 2013, a dispute in the parking lot of Divas Gentleman’s Club on Russell Cave Road in Lexington, Kentucky, ended with the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Johntel DeSean Pudd Crocker. The altercation began when several women fought and Crocker stepped in to intervene. That intervention reportedly led to a confrontation with Joshua Lee Tevis after Crocker climbed on or stepped on Tevis’s Nissan Maxima.

Trial testimony says the argument turned physical: Crocker allegedly punched Tevis in the mouth, after which Tevis drew a firearm and shot Crocker once in the chest. Tevis then fired a second shot that grazed Crocker. Two friends of Crocker also drew guns and an exchange of fire followed, with more than 30 rounds striking the area and seven cars hit by bullets. Police found Crocker suffering the fatal wound shortly after 2:30 a.m.

Tevis turned himself in the Wednesday after the shooting and faced charges. Surveillance video was introduced at trial; the defense argued self-defense, the prosecution said the shooting was unjustified. The jury convicted Tevis of reckless homicide and persistent felony offender status and recommended 15 years in prison. Did anyone who was there that night notice details about how the confrontation started or who fired first?
