Ali Perkins Shalash was a 17-year-old from Lexington, Kentucky who died after being shot in the head on November 23, 2009. He was at a friend’s home on Dorset Drive around 2 p.m. when a gunshot struck him. Ali was taken to the University of Kentucky Hospital and was pronounced dead at 7:05 p.m. that evening. He was described as Middle Eastern/Arab and remembered for roller-skating, basketball and singing.
The initial account from the only witness, Ali’s best friend Jamar Mays, described a masked intruder firing through a window. Investigators later focused on the person who had been with Ali. Mays was arrested and charged with murder; the case was resolved when he pleaded guilty to second-degree involuntary manslaughter, admitting the gun accidentally discharged while he was handling it. He was sentenced to ten years in prison.
Does anyone have memories of Ali or information about that day that could add context to what happened?
