William J. Collins, 48, was killed in an ambush in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. A sergeant with the Hardin County Sheriff’s Department for 15 years, Collins was off duty and with his wife, who worked for the department as a civilian employee, when a man stalked the couple and opened fire with a shotgun. Collins was fatally wounded while attempting to protect his wife.
A suspect was arrested and later tried. At trial the man said his motive was that the couple worked for the sheriff’s department. The court found him guilty of murdering both Collins and his wife and sentenced him to two life sentences. Collins and his wife left behind three children and were both respected by the Hardin County Sheriff’s Department.
