On January 18, 1993, Marvin Hicks, a 51-year-old head custodian at East Carter High School in Grayson, Kentucky, was killed after responding to a disturbance in an English classroom. A 17-year-old student, Gary Scott Pennington, entered the room armed with a .38-caliber revolver and first shot the teacher, Deanna McDavid, who died at the scene. Hicks, unarmed and attempting to help, was shot in the abdomen by Pennington and later died from his wound.
Pennington held students briefly before surrendering to arriving officers and was charged with the murders of Hicks and McDavid. Reports state Pennington was later convicted and sentenced to life in prison. The shootings devastated the school and community.
