On the night of July 3, 2022, at Rainier Vista Park in Lacey, Washington, fireworks drew a large crowd. Around 10:20 p.m. the display ended and about forty minutes later an argument erupted between two groups on an undeveloped parcel of land south of the park on Parkside Drive Southeast. Witnesses reported shouting followed by gunfire. Officers who responded to the 5400 block of 50th Avenue Southeast found 43-year-old Jordan Pilbro of Yelm with a gunshot wound; despite immediate life-saving efforts by police, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Pilbro is described as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and the family’s primary provider.

The Lacey Police Department collected witness statements and sought video and tips from the public. Witnesses gave a vague description of the shooter as a Black man in dark clothing. Investigators arrested a 19-year-old from Centralia, Kinyoce Z. Chatman, at his home on July 7, 2022; he was booked on suspicion of second-degree murder with bail set at $1 million and was formally charged on July 14, 2022.
