Leonard J. Truss, 17, was shot and killed in Chicago’s Roseland community on July 1, 2012. The shooting happened late in the evening; emergency medical care was attempted but Leonard was pronounced dead at the scene.

Leonard’s death came during a year of sharply increased homicide totals in Chicago, when the city recorded more than 500 homicides and experienced widespread youth gun violence across several neighborhoods.
