Late on August 25, 2021, 75-year-old Dan Kaufman and his 68-year-old wife, Vickie, were found dead of apparent gunshot wounds inside their South Gum Street home in Kennewick, Washington. Investigators also determined a fire had been intentionally set inside the residence.
Police identified the couple’s son, Ryan Kaufman, as the prime suspect. The case was linked to a wider violent rampage across the Tri-Cities: two neighbors in Finley were shot in the early morning hours (one fatally) and their home set ablaze, and fires were suspected at two International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union halls in Kennewick. A police chase ended in West Richland with an exchange of gunfire; the pickup driven by the suspect caught fire and a deceased person later believed to be Ryan Kaufman was found inside. Shell casings at the Kaufmans’ home were linked to a shotgun associated with the suspect. Reports noted a history of mental health issues for Ryan Kaufman and that no arrests were made after the suspect was found dead.
Does anyone have information about the Kaufman family or those events in late August 2021 that could help fill gaps in the timeline?
