Leonard Slack, a 65-year-old Black man, was shot inside his Kennewick apartment on August 9, 2021 and died two days later at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Slack suffered gunshot wounds to his forearm and stomach, was able to seek help from a neighbor, and repeatedly named Anthony Spearman as the person who shot him, saying Spearman had been trying to rob him.
A neighbor reported hearing a commotion and saw a tall, thin man in all black fleeing the scene. Investigators found the apartment ransacked, with a flipped couch, a broken table and a bronze revolver beneath Slack’s body. Authorities arrested 38-year-old Anthony T. Spearman at a Pasco motel two days after the shooting. Charges were upgraded from first-degree assault to murder after Slack died. Court proceedings have included disputed accounts of the event, competency evaluations, a withdrawn guilty plea to first-degree manslaughter and plans for a trial on second-degree murder.
Did anyone in the Kennewick area know Slack or see anything that night that could help clarify what happened?
