On July 13, 2020, Bothell police officer Jonathan Paul Shoop, 32, was killed during a violent encounter triggered by a traffic stop. Officer Shoop and his field training officer attempted to stop a vehicle with no license plate; the driver, identified as Henry Eugene Washington, refused to comply and fled. The pursuit ended when the car struck a pedestrian on a scooter and crashed into a median on Woodinville Drive.
After the crash Washington approached the patrol car and opened fire. In the exchange that followed Shoop’s partner returned fire. Officer Shoop was struck by a bullet from his partner’s weapon and died of the wound. The partner and the pedestrian who had been hit during the chase were hospitalized and survived. A manhunt led to Washington’s capture a few hours later on the roof of a nearby business.
What additional details could help clarify the sequence of events that night or shed light on the actions taken immediately after the shooting?
