Rodney Chandler was 18 when he died from a gunshot wound at a Meadow Road residence in Lakewood, Washington, on October 24, 2018. Neighbors said Chandler had been socializing earlier that day with 21-year-old acquaintance Curtis Pierre Davis IV and another friend; they were seen drinking and wrestling outside the apartment before an argument broke out.

A 911 call placed around 5 p.m. by Davis initially said he’d been awakened by gunshots and found Chandler bleeding with a .22-caliber rifle beside him. Detectives later say Davis changed his account, admitting he shot Chandler and claiming Chandler had fired at him with the rifle, prompting Davis to fire back with a .380-caliber pistol. Investigators found casings from both guns and multiple bullet holes in the walls; Davis also admitted burying the pistol, which police recovered.

Davis was arrested and initially charged with second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter. In January 2020 he pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and residential burglary and was sentenced to five years and ten months. Chandler’s family disputed Davis’s version and said the sentence was too lenient. Did anyone in Lakewood know Rodney or have information about what happened that afternoon?
