On May 2, 2017, outside a barbershop near Steilacoom Boulevard Southwest and South Tacoma Way in Lakewood, Washington, 43-year-old Jesse Hinton was killed during a planned ambush. Hinton, his cousin Charles McKee and at least one other accomplice waited in a van for a man named Cavell Reed, who Hinton accused of having shot him in the back in 2015. When Reed exited the barbershop the occupants of the van opened fire. Bullets struck the shop and endangered a mother and her two young children inside.
Reed, who was armed, returned fire; investigators determined his actions were self-defense. Hinton was hit while driving the getaway van, which then crashed into a utility pole. Police found Hinton deceased in the vehicle; his accomplices fled. Charles McKee was later arrested and, after pleading guilty to charges including conspiracy to commit second-degree murder, was sentenced to 20 years. Reed was not charged in Hinton’s death but pleaded guilty to unlawful gun possession and received a sentence of more than five years. The third person believed to have been in the van was still being sought by police.
Did anyone in the Lakewood area see activity near that barbershop on May 2, 2017, or know the identity of the third person in the van?
