On the evening of March 25, 2016, a confrontation at the Pacific Quick Shop in Spanaway, Washington, ended with the death of 21-year-old Jakeel Rashon Mason, a Black male. Surveillance footage shows the store owner, 30-year-old Min Sik Kim, initially confronting a group loitering outside. Mason entered the store and attempted to steal a pack of cigarettes. When Kim returned inside he drew a handgun and held Mason at gunpoint. After holstering his weapon the two fought; Mason broke free and ran toward the doorway. Kim then stood, drew his firearm again, and shot Mason twice in the back. Mason collapsed and died at the scene before medical help arrived.

The Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office later charged Min Sik Kim with second-degree murder. In June 2017 Kim was convicted of that charge; at sentencing he expressed remorse and said he accepted responsibility for taking Mason’s life. The Superior Court sentenced Kim to just over eight years in prison.
