Jessica Ann Marie Ortega was 27 when she was fatally shot on February 20, 2016, in Lakewood, Washington. A licensed practical nurse and mother of two, she had graduated from Clover Park and worked at the University Place Care Center. In the days before her death she reported escalating threats by her estranged boyfriend, 41-year-old Marco Perea, saying he had held a gun to her head on February 17 and telling her it was her time to die. She fled and reported that incident to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and filed for a temporary protection order the day before she was killed.

On the morning of February 20, Perea confronted Ortega as she began her shift and shot her multiple times. He then fled, leading officers on a high-speed chase down Interstate 5 during which he fired at law enforcement. The pursuit ended near Tillicum after officers disabled his vehicle; when he exited and engaged officers, multiple officers returned fire and he was killed.

Jessica’s family later filed a wrongful-death suit against Pierce County alleging the Sheriff’s Department failed to protect her despite her reports and concerns about Perea’s violent history and GPS ankle monitor. Does anyone have information about Jessica’s last days, her work at the nursing home, or contacts who might help fill gaps in the timeline?
