John Jay Johnson was 17 when he was shot at his North Whidbey home after answering a knock at the door late on November 10, 2015. He had been on a video chat with his girlfriend shortly before. A family friend found him unconscious and bleeding early November 11; he was flown to Harborview Medical Center and died of a gunshot wound to the head on November 13, 2015.
Investigators identified four people from Oak Harbor who knew Johnson: Brian Rayford, 20; David Nunez Jr., 19; Kitana Hernandez, 19; and Derek Reeder, 16. Detectives say the motive grew out of Nunez being upset about a $400 impound fee for a car Johnson had borrowed. Police report that Nunez obtained a .22-caliber handgun and that Hernandez drove the three males to Johnson’s house. Rayford and Reeder approached the door, Rayford fired through a brief conversation, and both fled to the car. The handgun was later disposed of by being thrown into the water.
Several pleas and sentences were entered in the case: Rayford pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and agreed to testify against the others; Nunez pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit first-degree murder; Hernandez pleaded guilty to first-degree rendering criminal assistance; Reeder was sentenced to a juvenile facility until he turned 21. Does anyone have information about Johnson’s last movements that night or about witnesses who haven’t been publicly identified?
