On October 20, 2015, 13-year-old Alexander Noah Demello was shot in the face while in a wooded area on property belonging to Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Lakewood, Washington. Alexander was with his older brother and a 17-year-old friend, Adonis Brown, after the group entered the base through a hole in a perimeter fence. Alexander died several days later in a hospital from his injuries.
Authorities say Brown fled the scene and was found hours later at his girlfriend’s house. Alexander’s brother reported hearing a gunshot, then seeing his brother on the ground and Brown holding a gun. Brown later gave a backpack containing bloody clothing and a handgun to a friend and initially told investigators the gun discharged accidentally while he was fidgeting with it. Brown, who had a prior assault conviction, was arrested, charged as an adult with second-degree manslaughter and unlawful possession of a firearm, pleaded guilty in February 2016, and was sentenced to nearly eight years in prison after expressing remorse.
Investigators also arrested Brown’s 21-year-old uncle, Richard Gastelum, accused of providing the handgun to his underage nephew; prosecutors later dismissed those charges with prejudice. Alexander’s parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the U.S. Government, alleging that a long-standing hole in the base fence contributed to the events that led to their son’s death.
Does anyone have information about that perimeter fence or who maintained it at the time?
