Harold Howell was 62 when he was found beaten in his Evergreen Towers II apartment in Old Town, Chicago, on April 8, 2012. A retired Army veteran and former Chicago Transit Authority worker, Howell survived nearly two weeks in critical condition but died on April 21; the medical examiner ruled his death a homicide.

The case drew attention not only because of the violence against an elderly resident in a senior housing complex but also because it exposed investigative challenges at the time. Detectives struggled with evidence collection and uncooperative witnesses amid departmental restructuring and budget cuts that moved investigators away from familiar neighborhoods and increased caseloads. Witness reluctance tied to fear and a prevailing no-snitch culture further hindered the inquiry.

Did anyone in Old Town or Evergreen Towers II at the time notice anything unusual around April 8, 2012?
