Oscar Raul Gutierrez-Mendoza was 21 when he was shot and killed on the evening of May 9, 2015, while seated in the front passenger seat of a parked car in the 1400 block of South Sixth Street in Sunnyside, Washington. A single bullet passed through his chest and caused fatal bleeding. Witnesses reported a rapid volley of gunfire—ten or more shots—before emergency responders arrived around 7:30 p.m. Another man at the scene was critically wounded. The apartment parking lot was left strewn with shell casings as detectives processed the scene.

Investigators identified a suspect within weeks. On May 25, 2015, 21-year-old Raymundo Casares of Outlook was arrested in Snohomish and booked into the Yakima County jail on $2 million bond, charged with aggravated first-degree murder and additional counts tied to the other victims. At the September 2019 trial, prosecutors said Casares opened fire after misreading blue clothing and a Los Angeles Dodgers cap as a gang sign; testimony described Gutierrez-Mendoza’s killing, his brother Jorge being struck by two bullets and left paralyzed, and a cousin who was shot at but not hit. Appeals and court opinions later reviewed those events and disputed eyewitness identification issues.

Does anyone have information about the shooting or knew Oscar and his family that could help clarify what happened that night?
