On Christmas Eve 2007, Wayne Scott Anderson, a 60-year-old White male, was the first of six family members murdered at a rural home in Carnation, Washington. That afternoon Wayne and his wife Judy were preparing for a holiday celebration when their youngest daughter, Michele Anderson, and her boyfriend, Joseph McEnroe, arrived and opened fire. Michele’s gun jammed on the initial attempt; McEnroe then fatally shot Wayne and immediately killed Judy as she reacted. The couple dragged the bodies to an outdoor shed and cleaned the house before other family members arrived that evening.
Later that night Wayne’s son Scott, Scott’s wife Erica, and their children Olivia, age five, and Nathan, age three, were ambushed after entering the home. Scott suffered multiple gunshot wounds; Erica made a brief 911 call after being shot but was killed, and both children were also killed. All six victims were found two days later when a friend and coworker of Judy’s checked the house after she failed to show up for work.
Michele Anderson and Joseph McEnroe returned to the scene while detectives were present, confessed, and were arrested and charged with six counts of aggravated first-degree murder; both were later found guilty.
