Soraya A. Gibson was a 32-year-old woman from Chicago who died on January 7, 2012, as the result of a homicide. Her death occurred during a year when the city recorded 506 homicides, up from 435 in 2011, a spike that commentators linked to factors such as unusually warm early weather and the disbanding of two specialized gang units previously used to concentrate police resources in violent hot spots.
Soraya’s homicide is one of many individual losses that underscored calls that year for systemic change and better community‑police collaboration to address root causes of violence.
If anyone knew Soraya or has information about her death, please come forward with what you know.
