Theresa Coates, 47, was killed on August 17, 2015, in Saratoga, Wisconsin. A 17-year-old, Miguel-Angel Oertel, who had recently dated Coates’ daughter, arrived at the Coates home that day armed with a shotgun after telling the daughter he was suicidal. He entered the residence, confronted Theresa Coates and shot her in the abdomen. Officers found Coates in a hallway; she later died at Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield. Oertel then shot himself in the head and survived.
After recovering, Oertel was charged with first-degree reckless homicide. His trial included an insanity defense that the jury rejected; he was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years in prison. The family’s testimony at trial emphasized the emotional devastation the killing caused.
Did anyone in the Saratoga area see or hear anything related to the incident on August 17, 2015?
