Cheryl Lynn Gilberg, 43, was found shot to death in her home in Mazomanie, Wisconsin, on February 23, 2014. The death was treated as a homicide and investigators rapidly focused on a domestic connection.
Police identified Phillip A. Byrd, 39, of Janesville and described as Gilberg’s former boyfriend, as a person of interest; he was arrested the same day on unrelated outstanding warrants, including for child support. Within weeks prosecutors announced a first-degree intentional homicide charge against Byrd. Defense statements in court described the shooting as arising from a heated argument and a struggle over a firearm after Gilberg accused Byrd of infidelity.
The community was left reeling by a violent end to a relationship that had been known locally. If anyone knew Cheryl, her routines, or circumstances surrounding that February day, please come forward with information.
