On the evening of Friday, August 12, 2016, a party on East Rogers Drive in Stillwater, Oklahoma, ended with 23-year-old Austin Lee Clavin of Perry dead from multiple gunshot wounds. Clavin confronted another partygoer, 23-year-old Robert Eugene Keeler Jr., and an argument escalated into a confrontation that witnesses said led directly to the shooting. Police arrived after a 9-1-1 call at 10:07 p.m. and found Clavin deceased at the scene.
Keeler was arrested at the scene and charged with homicide. His defense was that he acted in self-defense, claiming Clavin was armed with a baseball bat, while prosecution witnesses testified Clavin was unarmed when shot in the chest and arm. The first trial ended in a mistrial; a second jury convicted Keeler of first-degree manslaughter and he received a 10-year prison sentence. Family and friends remembered Clavin as a young man who loved drawing, music, and animals.
If anyone at the party or with information about the confrontation can help clarify what happened that night, please come forward.
