On October 13, 2014, in Duncan, Oklahoma, the bodies of John Alexander Hruby, his wife Joy Hruby (known as Tinker), and their 17-year-old daughter Katherine were found in the family home. All three had been shot to death; the housekeeper discovered the scene. John, 50, was publisher of the Marlow Review, a role he shared with his wife, and the family was described as prominent in the community.
Suspicion fell on the couple’s 19-year-old son, Alan Hruby, a University of Oklahoma student. Investigators reported he had been financially dependent on his family and had previous problems with unauthorized credit-card charges. After the killings he disposed of the gun and the home security system disc, then traveled to Dallas and stayed at the Ritz-Carlton. He was arrested, confessed to killing his parents and sister, and prosecutors said the motive was to secure the family estate to pay debts. Alan pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder and received three consecutive life sentences without parole.
Did anyone in the Duncan area know the Hruby family well enough to add context about Alan’s relationships with his parents or the family’s finances?
