On July 26, 2009, Deputy Marvin Gene Williams, 43, of the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office was shot while serving an arrest warrant at a residence in Seminole, Oklahoma. He and his partner, Deputy Robbie Whitebird, and an officer from the Seminole Nation Lighthorse Police Department approached the front door when a person inside opened fire. Deputy Whitebird was killed at the scene; Deputy Williams was critically wounded, airlifted to a hospital in Oklahoma City, and died during the flight. Williams had served the Sheriff’s Office for seven years.
Following the shooting the suspect barricaded inside the home and later surrendered after negotiations with law enforcement. The case proceeded through investigation and legal action, and the suspect eventually pleaded guilty and received life without parole for two counts of murder and additional charges.
