Six-year-old Michael Anthony Hughes was taken from his first-grade classroom at Indian Meridian Elementary School in Choctaw on September 12, 1994. A man identified as Franklin Delano Floyd entered the classroom at gunpoint, falsely claimed to be Michael’s father, and abducted the boy. Floyd also abducted the school principal and later tied the principal to a tree in a wooded area; the principal was found hours later but Michael was missing.

Floyd was arrested in November 1994. Decades later, while on death row in Florida for an unrelated murder, he told FBI agents that he had murdered Michael on the day of the abduction, saying he shot the boy twice in the back of the head and buried him near the final exit on Interstate 35 before the Texas border. Searches of the area did not recover Michael’s remains, and authorities have said his body has never been found.
