On the evening of November 12, 1988, 27-year-old truck driver and father of twin girls Dwayne Allen McCorkendale pulled his rig into a rest stop off the Turner Turnpike in Chandler, Oklahoma to use the payphone. He announced over his CB radio that he was going to make a call. As he walked toward the phone, coins in hand, someone ambushed him and a single, close-range shotgun blast to the back killed him instantly. An anonymous caller reported a body beside the phone booth and troopers found McCorkendale with coins scattered around him; his wallet containing about $25 and his keys were missing, suggesting robbery.

Investigators followed multiple leads, most notably repeated trucker sightings of a brown Ford Pinto with a CB radio often occupied by a white male and a black male and sometimes a white woman. Witnesses said the Pinto’s occupants acted abusively over the radio and one trucker reported a woman fleeing into a Pinto at a nearby rest stop the day before the killing. The case remains unsolved with no arrests. Has anyone with memories of the Turner Turnpike area or who knew drivers from that era seen or heard anything that could help?
