Nicholaus Craig, 36, was fatally shot on September 21, 2022 — his birthday — and found in the driver’s seat of his vehicle in the parking lot of the Scarlet Pearl Casino in D’Iberville, Mississippi. The cause of death was a single gunshot wound. Craig, originally from Mobile, Alabama but living in California at the time, had been in town to celebrate with family.
Investigators traced the case into Alabama after finding Craig’s rental Nissan Altima burned behind an apartment complex in Prichard the day after the shooting. Surveillance footage from the casino and a nearby gas station helped identify people believed responsible in what police described as a random and apparent robbery attempt. Warrants were issued for two Alabama teenagers, 19-year-old Darius Dewayne Rowser Jr. and 18-year-old Karmelo Cortez Morris Derks, who were charged with first-degree murder.
A later federal indictment named six individuals in connection with a violent crime spree that included Craig’s killing, charging them with offenses including conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, carjacking, and interstate transportation of a stolen vehicle, along with obstruction, witness tampering, and illegal firearm possession. Does anyone have information about Craig’s movements in D’Iberville or the Prichard area in September 2022 that could help investigators?
