A trivial domestic dispute turned deadly in Meadville, Mississippi when 43-year-old Billy Darnel Brown was shot and killed on September 2, 2022. Gibson’s wife, who was Brown’s sister, intervened and broke up the fight, but the situation soon escalated again when Gibson produced a handgun and shot Brown, killing him.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and the county coroner investigated the shooting. A Franklin County grand jury returned an indictment in January 2023 charging Richard Gibson with murder, and the matter went to trial in May 2023. A jury found Gibson guilty of first-degree murder and the court sentenced him to life in prison for the shooting death of Billy Darnel Brown.
