Matthew Dillon Chase, 30, of Lewisville, Arkansas, was shot and killed in Greenville, Mississippi, on April 10, 2022. Chase and companions had stopped to look at what appeared to be an old, abandoned truck in an alley behind Cornell Avenue when a nearby resident, from a back porch about forty yards away, fired roughly ten shots toward the group. One bullet struck Chase in the chest, and he died at the scene on Abide Road.
The shooter, identified as Deshunrick Mayes, was taken into custody after a standoff with police and charged with Second Degree Murder and two counts of Attempted Murder for firing at Chase’s companions. At trial the defense argued Mississippi’s Castle Doctrine, claiming Mayes believed his property was under threat; the jury rejected that claim. Mayes was convicted of Second Degree Murder and both counts of Attempted Murder and received concurrent nine-year terms in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
Were there any witnesses in the neighborhood who saw the group near the truck or the shooting who haven’t spoken publicly?
