On the night of January 26, 2022, in Greenville, Mississippi, 41-year-old Maurice Watson was shot and killed inside an apartment on Cornell Avenue. Police were called at about 11:28 p.m.; officers found Watson unresponsive in the living room with multiple gunshot wounds and he was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy determined the cause of death was homicide by multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigators identified 22-year-old Daniel Grace as the primary suspect after witnesses reported hearing an argument between him and Watson shortly before the shots. Grace left the scene leaving several shell casings and a black knitted hat, but turned himself in about four hours later. He told police he had acted in self-defense, claiming Watson had threatened him with a knife; no knife or other weapon was found at the scene.
Grace was initially charged with First Degree Murder and later pleaded guilty to Second Degree Murder. Sentencing was postponed to allow Watson’s family to give input on an appropriate sentence. Does anyone have details about the incident or knew Maurice Watson that could help fill in what happened that night?
