Justin Rone May, 37, died from a gunshot wound on the morning of Thursday, December 9, 2021, at the main gate of the Engineer Research and Development Center in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Emergency services were called to Hall’s Ferry Road around 11:30 a.m. after a report that an individual had been shot in the head; May was taken to Merit Health River Region and pronounced deceased in the emergency department by the Warren County Deputy Coroner.

The Vicksburg Police Department opened an investigation. The deputy coroner said the fatal wound was believed to be self-inflicted; no arrests were made and no suspects were named. May was born December 17, 1983, and lived in Vicksburg. An obituary described him as a devoted father who had served in the military, later attended nursing school, and worked as a security guard and trainer at ERDC; it also noted he struggled daily with PTSD following his service.
